He’s Growing Up But Doesn’t Understand

growth chartIt’s so hard now that Little Bug is getting bigger.  He’s a tall kiddo, gonna take after papa and daddy.  He has such a sweet heart and it breaks so easily.  You know those play park areas in malls, well he is too tall to play in them.  At this one mall, they had a security guard measuring kids as they go in.

All Little Bug wanted to do was play with Princess.  The security guard let Princess in but said Little Bug couldn’t go in.  He lost it.  My poor baby was crying, “I just want to play.”  I couldn’t get him to understand what was happening.  I tried to stop him before but he just wouldn’t get out of the line to go in but when he got to the security guard he put a stop to any hopes Little Bug had of playing.

I took him off to the side so I could calm him down.  Every time I tried to explain he was too tall, Little Bug replied “but I’m nice”.  My heart just broke for him.  How do I explain this to him?  How do I tell him that it’s so the big kids won’t hurt the little ones? I just wasn’t prepared for this.  Most parents don’t have to explain this, we do.

As I tried to comfort him, all the people going by just kept staring.  What?  Have they never seen a child cry before?  I was so angry just watching these people go by.  I’m not one for saying anything as my concern was for my child and not them but still it frustrated me.  It wasn’t just kids doing it, it was adults!

His brain is growing but it can’t keep up with the growth of his body.  All I wanted to do was have a good time with the kids and we tried.  We just left and Little Bug got over it but it was hard, very hard.  It was heart breaking not just for him but for all of us. I just wanted to wrap him up in my arms and carry him away from the pain, from the staring, uncaring eyes.  I wish I could build him a play area all his own, where he could play all he wanted till his little sweet heart was full.

I have to say that Princess is one amazing little sister though,  she left the play area right away when daddy told her they wouldn’t let brother play.  She said, “It’s ok Bug, we’ll go play somewhere else.”  Pretty amazing for a six year old huh?  She loves her brother.  As daddy said, “we have some pretty fantastic kids don’t we?”  Yes, we do!

Awww that was really sweet of your daughter. How heartbreaking that was for you and your son. How do you explain to them when they don’t understand? I would have been annoyed with people stopping to stare. Hope you have a great Monday.
