Zhu Zhu Pets – The No Mess Pets

August 24, 2009 · 2 comments

I’ve mentioned before how much my kiddos want a pet but due to lease agreements we can’t have any. Not to mention I really don’t think they are ready for the responsibility of a real pet.  Well, recently I was given the opportunity to try Zhu Zhu pets. They are fun, interactive pets (hamsters to be exact) who talk, move and navigate their way around their habitat as well as around your house.

My kids, especially my little animal loving, pet wanting princess simply loved this toy.  I couldn’t hardly get her to put the hamster down so we could see how it moved around it’s habitat.  The hamsters are really cute looking and she even carried it with her when we went out.  They make cute sounds as they maneauver  through their habitat, their exercise wheel, down the slide and even drive it’s little car out of the garage.  This is a large habitat once you begin adding on to the main habitat.  It does take some moving rooms and objects around to make all your pieces fit and work together especially the more attachments you add on.  So before you begin putting it together make sure you have a decent size area to place it on.  It’s not easy pack away and reassemble type of toy.

As far as assembly of this toy is concerned though, it’s very simple to put together.  Hey, if I can do it alone, anyone can.   If you don’t have two little anxious kiddos taking everything out of the boxes at once it shouldn’t take any time at all to get it set up.  The pieces easily snap together and are just as easy to unsnap and move.  No pinched fingers here. Yay!   As you’ll see in the video, they actually look really cute running around their little habitat but notice too that we used an old train table and how much space it took up.   The main reason we used the table was because the hamsters work better on a smooth surface than on carpet as do most toys with wheels.  If you don’t have a table large enough a tile floor works just as well.  The large size of the hamster habitat is stated right on the boxes, “Collect and Connect all of the Zhu Zhu Pet accessories to make a Humongous Hamster city!” so you know ahead of time what you are getting.

We also received the Adventure Ball so just like a real hamster you can put him in it and watch it as it explores the rest of your home.  This was where I noticed a slight problem.  The hamster even with the enclosed stabilizer still had a tendency to fall over inside the ball several times and we’d have to shake it just a bit to get it back on it’s feet and rolling again. Not something I’d do with a real hamster but felt it was safe enough with this one.   This is a really cute toy if you like me, have little ones who want a pet but aren’t really ready for one.  Thing I like best, no stinky hamster smell and no stinky hamster mess to clean up.  Guess I couldn’t really hope for a less mess pet.  Take a look for yourself at just how cute these little hamsters are.

The only other point I need to mention is this, if you have a child with semi-long to long hair be careful.  These are mechanical toys and the wheels rotate and can catch your child’s hair.  I know cause it happened to mine.  Fortunately it didn’t take much to get it out.
