October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Tomorrow October 12, 2011 is Unity Day. I saw this poster at my kid’s school, my daughter wanted to go shopping for an orange shirt. We will find her one and she will wear it tomorrow in support of Unity day. It’s her way of telling others bullying is not okay and to those being bullied, they are not alone.
Send a message of support to students who have experienced bullying by wearing Orange.
We’ve experienced bullying. I watch out for it. It’s a major worry and concern of mine especially with a special needs child although bullies don’t just pick on special needs children. So many of us have been bullied. We experienced it when we were in school. Some of our kids have experienced it already. Some may in the years ahead. Have you?
There have been countless news stories of children taking their own lives because they felt so alone and helpless against bullies they felt they couldn’t go on. No child should ever feel so much pain and desperation that they take their own lives. They felt alone. It’s time to show them they aren’t before another child feels this desperation.
Aren’t you ready to put a stop to it?
Pacer.org is bringing attention to this problem. You can learn more about Unity Day and what you can do by visiting http://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/
What can you do?
- Add your name to the digital “The End of Bullying Begins With Me” petition
- Share your story. Let these young ones being bullied know they aren’t alone.
- Spread the word on social media platforms.
“The culture of bullying won’t end until people across the country take action and show children and teens that they care,” says Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, which sponsors the month.
“This is a very real and painful issue that kids are facing,” Hertzog says. “But they don’t have to face it alone, and bullying can be prevented if we all work together to change the culture.” - Pacer.org

Thanks for sharing this. I will make absolutely sure I wear orange tomorrow, along with my kids. This bullying has gotten so drastic with the rise of social media and texting and it has got to stop.
Thanks Jessica. The more we can get this information out to others the louder our statement will be.
